2D BARCODES: THE NEW STANDARD 

2D barcodes are replacing traditional barcodes in retail. This is nothing new – GS1 standards for the use of 2D codes at POS have been in place since 2022. In the future, manufacturers, suppliers and retailers will be able to use GS1-compliant 2D codes, while barcodes will become increasingly less important.

By the end of 2027 at the latest, the use of 2D codes at POS is to be implemented through suitable POS systems – a development that is being driven forward by GS1, retailers and many other international partners. For manufacturers, this means that they need to start adapting their marking systems at an early stage in order to benefit from the advantages and meet future retail requirements.
